Climate and Dress

Average temperatures in Corpus Christi in late May range from a high of 88 degrees to a low of 71 degrees.  Average rainfall for May is 3 inches. 

It is usually humid and windy during this time of year. 

Dress for the conference is normally business casual to casual depending on the event.  Even though it may be warm outside, remember that hotel meeting rooms are generally chilly, so you may want to bring a sweater.

Nuts and Bolts -- Basic Training for New Recruiters and New Career Services Professionals --  Dave Kraus (Texas Tech), Monica Choi (UT Austin - Communication Career Services), and Eric (Woody) Woodworth (Enterprise)

Developing an effective college relations/recruiting program or career services program doesn't just happen. Both time and energy are necessary to perfect the many details of your job. This workshop will provide new tools for your toolbox to build or improve your programming and your skill sets. In addition you will learn about results-oriented best practices in electronic, technical, and diversity recruiting.

Technology Information Roundtable -- Paul Leverington (Huston-Tillotson College)

In the morning, you will meet with colleagues for information and best practices on the use of technology by employers and career centers.

Employers will discuss which systems they use in their recruiting efforts (Monster, Hotjobs, Career Builder, specific college/university career centers, etc.) and why, success or disappointments with video interviewing, virtual career fairs and/or any other technology-based recruiting tool. 

Career center participants will discuss career management systems they use and why, success or disappointments with virtual career fairs, requests for video interviews and selected systems, communication with today’s students (email, instant messaging, chat rooms, blackboard, etc.) and/or any other technology tool that has met with both college/university and employer satisfaction. 

In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas in a combined (both employers and career centers) roundtable forum that will focus on technology trends, challenges and new ideas to enhance the use of technology in the workplace.

Heavy appetizers and beverages will be provided in the Art Center Courtyard, located directly across Shoreline Boulevard from the Corpus Christi Yacht Basin.  The galleries will be open for a brief period, so arrive early.  The Art Center is an eight-block walk along the seawall from the Omni Bayfront Hotel. 

NOTES:    From the hotel, go south along the Seawall to the Art Center.  The walk is approximately 15-20 minutes.  Limited bus service will be available for those needing transportation assistance.

Open evening – enjoy Corpus Christi!  For things to do, visit the Corpus Christi / Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau web site at www.corpuschristi-tx-cvb.org.

Thursday, May 26^th, 7:00 PM – Midnight 

Join us for a great barbecue dinner aboard the historic World War II aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Lexington.  Tours of the Lexington are being arranged along with a special souvenir for each attendee.  The evening will conclude with an encore performance by the fabulous “Klocks”.

For the SWACE 2005 conference, we will be hosting the Books with a Porpoise Café in keeping with the theme of the conference.  Come in and browse a variety of books on career exploration, career development, recruiting, hiring the best, managing, leadership, and teambuilding. Enjoy some java and snacks as you sit in a relaxed setting to look over the books.   We will have our Top Picks list submitted by SWACE members available for you as well.  We will also be holding drawings in the room to give away books throughout the conference.
